When summer arrives, we imagine sunshine, family adventures, popsicles, and making memories. And while those things absolutely happen, there's another side of summer that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.
The truth is, summer can be exhausting for moms.
The dishes seem endless. The snack requests start before breakfast is even over. Someone is always hungry, bored, thirsty, fighting with a sibling, or asking for a ride somewhere. The routines that help keep life manageable during the school year suddenly disappear, and many moms find themselves working overtime trying to keep everyone entertained, fed, and happy.
Meanwhile, social media is filled with picture-perfect vacations, smiling families, and elaborate summer bucket lists that can leave us feeling like we're somehow not doing enough.
But here's the reality:
You do not have to create magical moments every single day.
Your kids don't need a Pinterest-worthy craft, an expensive outing, or a packed schedule to have a great summer. Some of their favorite memories will come from sprinklers in the backyard, movie nights in pajamas, trips to the library, or simply spending time together.
It's okay if your house is messier than usual.
It's okay if your kids are bored sometimes.
It's okay if lunch is sandwiches for the third day in a row.
And it's definitely okay if you need a break.
Summer burnout is real. It doesn't mean you're failing. It means you're carrying a lot.
So if you're feeling overwhelmed, give yourself permission to lower the pressure. Skip the guilt. Let the kids build a fort. Order pizza. Sit in the shade with an iced tea. Take the shortcut.
Because the goal isn't a perfect summer.
The goal is a summer your family enjoys.
And sometimes the best memories happen when we stop trying so hard to make everything perfect.
If no one has told you lately, you're doing a great job.
The snacks, the rides, the sunscreen, the laundry, the endless "Mom!" calls from the other room... it all matters.
Take a breath, give yourself some grace, and remember:
You deserve summer too.
