August is the perfect time to squeeze in a little more summer creativity! These affordable crafts include nature projects, back-to-school creations, keepsakes, and colorful activities for children of different ages. Most use supplies families may already have at home.

Costs are approximate and assume basic items such as scissors, glue, crayons, and tape are already available.

August 1: Sunshine Handprint Art ☀️

Age: 2–8
Approximate cost: $1–$3
Supplies: Yellow paint, white or blue paper, paintbrush, markers
Instructions: Paint your child’s palm and fingers yellow, then press the hand in a circle around the page. Add a smiling face in the center and write something that makes your child shine.
Adult help: Recommended for younger children.

August 2: Watermelon Paper Fan 🍉

Instructions: Twist foil into a long coil and place it inside the tube. Add a small amount of rice, securely cover both ends, and decorate the outside. Slowly tilt it to hear the “rain.”

August 28: Melted-Crayon Sun Catcher 🌈

Age: 6–12

Supplies: Crayon shavings, wax paper, towel, iron, string
Instructions: Place crayon shavings between two sheets of wax paper. An adult should cover it with a towel and briefly iron it on low. Let it cool, cut it into shapes, and hang it near a sunny window.
Adult help: Required for the iron.

August 29: Painted Leaf Prints 🍃
