October has arrived, bringing cooler mornings, crunchy leaves, pumpkin everything, costumes, candy and the annual family debate over whether turning on the heat before November is a sign of weakness. 😂
But October has more going for it than Halloween.
This month is packed with official celebrations, ridiculous food holidays, opportunities to make memories and perfectly good excuses to do something unexpected with your kids.
So, in true Buzzy B fashion, we're celebrating the whole darn month.
Here are 12 reasons October deserves a little extra family fun. 🐝💗
Parents, this one's for you.
While the kids are discussing Halloween costumes for the 746th time, enjoy a cup of coffee, tea, cocoa or whatever gets you through the morning.
Make it family fun: Set up a morning drink bar with cocoa for the kids and grown-up drinks for you. Add whipped cream and sprinkles because October has officially begun.
Tacos deserve their own holiday, and I will not be accepting opposing arguments at this time.
Make a build-your-own taco bar and let everyone create their masterpiece.
Buzzy challenge: Award prizes for Most Likely to Fall Apart, Most Cheese Used on a Single Taco and What Exactly Happened Here?
This one is wonderfully simple.
Make somebody smile.
Leave a note in a lunchbox. Compliment a stranger. Text Grandma. Tell your child something you genuinely love about them.
Better yet, see how many people your family can make smile in one day.
Tiny kindness. Big buzz. 💗
We'll let the grown-ups decide what they're doing with the first half. 😉
But pizza night? Absolutely.
Order from your favorite local pizza place or make personal pizzas at home.
Let everyone choose their own toppings and eat dinner while watching a Halloween movie.
October perfection.
This one is worth celebrating.
It's a beautiful opportunity to remind the girls in our lives that their voices, ideas, dreams and futures matter.
Ask your daughter, granddaughter, niece or another girl you love:
"If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?"
Then really listen to her answer. 💗
I don't make the rules.
October 14 is essentially asking us to eat dessert.
Bake something together, visit a local bakery, make sundaes or let everyone choose a favorite treat.
Bonus idea: Eat dessert FIRST.
Your children will discuss this shocking breach of protocol for years.
Stay with me. 😂
We're making this one ridiculous.
Have everyone invent a completely fake word and definition.
Socktopus: The mysterious collection of unmatched socks living in your laundry room.
Snackcident: When you accidentally eat the snacks you bought for your children.
Congratulations. Educational family fun.
Finally.
A holiday honoring my preferred Sunday speed.
Declare a slow evening. Pajamas early. Easy dinner. Movie. Blankets. No elaborate plans.
Sometimes family fun means not going anywhere.
This is a lovely opportunity to talk with kids about service, gratitude and the incredible companionship animals can provide.
You could make a thank-you card for a veteran, donate pet supplies to an organization in your community or simply spend extra time loving on your own furry family member.
Put paper across the table and bring out crayons, markers, paint or whatever supplies are hiding in the craft cabinet.
Here's the important part:
Adults participate too.
Draw portraits of each other. Paint pumpkins. Create monsters. Make the world's ugliest masterpiece.
Art doesn't have to be good to be fun.
Black cats have been tangled up in Halloween legends and superstitions for centuries, which makes October the perfect time to give them a little love.
Learn a few black-cat facts together, draw your own Halloween kitty or check out adoptable animals at a local shelter.
No adoption required.
Although I accept no responsibility if you leave with a cat. 😹
We couldn't possibly end anywhere else.
Costumes.
Candy.
Pumpkins.
Trick-or-treating.
Trunk-or-treats.
Halloween parties.
Community events.
And children asking "Is it time yet?" beginning approximately six hours before it's time.
Whether your family goes ALL OUT or celebrates with pizza and a movie at home, make Halloween fit your family.
There is no correct way to celebrate.
It gives us 31 opportunities to make an ordinary day a little less ordinary.
You don't need an elaborate outing every weekend.
Maybe it's tacos on October 4.
Dessert before dinner on October 14.
A ridiculously lazy Sloth Day.
A pumpkin patch.
A Halloween movie under a blanket.
Or one random Tuesday when you decide everyone needs hot chocolate.
Those tiny traditions have a funny way of becoming the things our kids remember.
So celebrate something.
Celebrate nothing.
Celebrate because it's Tuesday.
Just don't let October disappear while you're busy trying to make it perfect. 🍂💗
And when you're ready for the pumpkin patches, fall festivals, trunk-or-treats, Halloween celebrations and hundreds of other family events happening around our Colorado communities, head over to The Buzzy B Calendar.
