Somewhere between buying the Halloween costumes, carving pumpkins, planning the perfect family outing, and wondering how a bag of fun-sized candy now costs approximately the same as a car payment, we sometimes forget what Halloween is really about.
The memories.
Not the matching costumes. Not the perfectly decorated front porch. Not the $75 trip to the pumpkin patch where someone inevitably cries because they wanted a different pumpkin.
The memories.
And here's the funny thing about memories: the ones our kids hold onto aren't always the ones we worked the hardest to create.
Think back to Halloween when you were a kid.
Do you remember how much your costume cost? Probably not.
Do you remember whether your parents decorated the entire house to look like something straight out of a magazine? Doubtful.
But you might remember running from house to house with your friends, the sound of crunchy leaves under your feet, and dumping your candy onto the living room floor to inspect your treasure.
You remember trading three Tootsie Rolls for one Reese's Peanut Butter Cup because, clearly, you understood the importance of a good business deal at an early age.
You remember your mom fixing your costume for the seventeenth time, your dad insisting you wear a coat over it because it was freezing, and that one house in the neighborhood that gave out FULL-SIZED candy bars.
Those were the houses of legends.
Those little moments? That's where the magic lived.
Somewhere along the way, parenting became a competition nobody actually signed up for.
Suddenly, Halloween isn't just Halloween.
It's elaborate costumes, professionally decorated cookies, pumpkin patch photo shoots, themed lunches, perfectly coordinated family outfits, and enough decorations to make your front yard visible from space.
And don't even get me started on Pinterest.
Listen, if you're the parent who loves going all out, DO IT! I love a good theme, a cute bow, and any excuse to decorate.
But if your child's costume is held together with safety pins and determination, you're doing just fine, too.
If dinner before trick-or-treating is frozen pizza because you've been running around all day, congratulations. You've fed your children.
If the pumpkin you carved looks less like a jack-o'-lantern and more like it needs immediate medical attention, put a candle in it anyway.
Your kids aren't grading your Halloween performance. They're just happy you're part of it.
Some of the best Halloween traditions don't cost much of anything.
Maybe your family watches Hocus Pocus every October.
Maybe you make the same silly Halloween snacks every year.
Maybe you drive around looking at decorated houses, carve pumpkins together, or let the kids stay up just a little later on Halloween night.
Maybe you have a tradition of sorting candy into piles, negotiating trades, and quietly wondering how your children collected enough sugar to power a small city.
Or maybe your favorite tradition is sitting on the porch, wrapped in blankets, watching the neighborhood come alive with tiny superheroes, princesses, dinosaurs, and at least seventeen versions of Spider-Man.
None of those moments require expensive tickets or elaborate planning.
They just require being there.
And sometimes, that's the hardest part.
Because as parents, we're usually the ones making everything happen.
We're buying the costumes, remembering the school parties, checking the weather, finding the missing costume accessories, and reminding someone for the hundredth time that they cannot eat all their candy before bedtime.
But every once in a while, we need to stop organizing the memories long enough to actually enjoy them.
Here's the part that gets me.
One day, your child won't need you to help them into their costume.
They won't ask you to paint their face, carry their candy bucket, or walk them to the next house.
One day, they might decide they're too old for trick-or-treating.
And you'll find yourself looking at old Halloween pictures, remembering the little pumpkin who refused to wear their hat, the princess who insisted on rain boots, or the superhero who fell asleep in the car clutching a plastic pumpkin full of candy.
You'll laugh at the costumes.
You'll remember the chaos.
And you might wish, just for a moment, that you could do it all again.
Even the part where someone had a complete meltdown because their candy bucket was the wrong color.
Well, maybe not that part.
This Halloween, I hope you'll give yourself permission to enjoy the season without feeling like you have to create something extraordinary every single day.
Go to the pumpkin patch if you want to.
Stay home and make popcorn if you'd rather.
Buy the costume. Make the costume. Borrow the costume. Pull something together from the dress-up bin five minutes before leaving the house.
Take the pictures, even if everyone isn't looking at the camera.
Laugh when things go wrong.
Eat a piece of candy with your kids.
And when you're walking down the sidewalk on Halloween night, listening to their excited voices and watching them race toward the next porch light, take a second to soak it all in.
Because years from now, they probably won't remember how much money you spent.
They won't remember whether everything went according to plan.
They'll remember how it felt.
They'll remember the laughter, the excitement, the silly traditions, and the feeling of being part of something special.
And hopefully, they'll remember that you were right there beside them.
Even if you were carrying three costume accessories, two candy buckets, someone's jacket, and a half-eaten granola bar.
Because, well, parenting. ๐
The real Halloween magic isn't in the candy.
It's in the memories we make along the way. ๐๐
